“Shieldmaiden” for Carthage Wind Orchestra

Shieldmaiden was commissioned by Carthage College for the “150 Years of Carthage Women” Celebration, 2019-20, in recognition of their intrepid initiative and collective contributions, and will be premiered by the Carthage Wind Orchestra under the direction of Dr. James Ripley.
Sheildmaiden will receive its World Premiere on January, 12, 2020, in Osaka, Japan, and will also be presented in performance in the Japanese cities of Kurashiki and Kobe. The Western Hemisphere Premiere will take place on January 26 at Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
The piece is based on the following news article from National Geographic (2017), in which the bones of a Viking warrior were discovered to be female through DNA testing: https://www.nationalgeographic.com/news/2017/09/viking-warrior-woman-archaeology-spd/
