Undulating, aleatoric textures in the trio and treble parts provide a beautiful layer over the melody in the male voices. The ending is particularly sweet, featuring the trio more prominently over the sound of the choir.

Text

Now you will feel no rain, for each of you will be shelter for the other.

Now you will feel no cold, for each of you will be warmth to the other.

Now there will be no loneliness, for each of you will be companion to the other.

Now you are two persons, but there is only one life before you.

May beauty surround you both in the journey ahead and through all the years.

May happiness be your companion and your days together be good and long upon the earth.

– widely attributed as a traditional Apache Indian love poem

Review

“No Rain” is one of the most beautiful and heartfelt pieces that Choral Arts Ensemble has ever commissioned! The text is an Apache Indian love poem, and I was touched to know that Jocelyn was planning her own wedding at the time she was writing the piece. The choral textures of the piece are varied throughout, and the treble trio adds a special touch to the vocal proceedings.
