Last night I had the pleasure to work with Jason Max Ferdinand and Harmony Tours & Choirs of America on a new piece called "American Dream." It was an awesome event. The students loved the whole experience, and hearing people sing my music at Lincoln Center is always a thrill. THANK YOU TO EVERYONE INVOLVED!And I'm pretty proud of this piece. I commissioned one of my favorite poets, Julia Klatt Singer, to write me a new poem to celebrate the rich diversity in our country. Thought I'd share it with you all today.Have a great weekend!American Dream Magnolias and bitterroot. Mountain laurel and wild prairie rose.Deep rooted, our first thoughts of light and land, we travel by wind and by sea. Follow rivers through banks and prairies, forests where treeslive 300, 400 years. We are so young compared to these. Sunflower, Saguaro cactus blossom, California poppy, Camellia. We love independence, sing of freedom, respect hard work, civility. We believe in equality. We have hope for each other, have hopefor the future, have hope for you and for me. Colorado blue columbine, orange blossom, Cherokee rose. This land is our mother, the bison and deer, rabbit, possum, bee and crowour sisters and brothers. Northern flicker, wild turkey, willow ptarmigan, hummingbird and loon. Our differences, not our similarities, make us beautiful and strong. We share our borders and our water, our love and our air. So we start somewhere in the middle, work our way out,Work it out. For we are all neighbors, pioneers, for and of change. Goldenrod, black-eyed Susan. Sego lily, lady slipper. We are rich, every colorof the sunrise, tender petals, hard and coolas the moon.I bring you a bouquet of Dogwood, peony, violets and forget-me-nots.It is our similarities, not our differences we have walked arm in arm with, dreaming this American dream, all along.
I was featured on the HERo Talk podcast, talking with Darrian about composition, promoting women in composition, and incorporating multimedia into the classical music space! Check it out!
Hello, everyone! I'm going to be a part of a very special children's book launch next week with Kao Kalia Yang at the Mall of America! She commissioned me to write music underneath the telling of this important story. I'll be there to perform it live! Come say hi! 🙂
