Test Pilot is a chamber dance opera by choreographer Penelope Freeh and composer Jocelyn Hagen that explores the legendary story of the Wright Brothers as seen through the eyes of their sister, Katharine. The power and wonder of creativity and invention are examined through the birth of flight.

Freeh and Hagen weave their personal family stories into this fresh work, and historical aviation heroics are interspersed throughout the oblique narrative that features a string quartet, six singers, four dancers and a video artist.

Freeh and Hagen’s hybrid dance/music pieces illuminate each other’s work, challenge performers, and expand expectations of the relationship between the two disciplines. Their landmark collaboration, Slippery Fish (2012), pushed their personal boundaries of how new performance is created, rehearsed and executed. Slippery Fish was hailed as “…completely original in all respects” by the StarTribune.

Test Pilot won a 2015 Sage Award for Outstanding Design.
